The Spiral of Time

A multimedia installation by
Laura DuBois & Annamarta Dostourian

View Spiral Time
This piece is part of an ongoing installation memorializing all those killed in Iraq since U.S. invasion and occupation of Iraq began in March 2003.

Early cultures expressed their understanding of the spiraling nature of time in their architecture as represented by the temple form here, inspired by the 9th century AD spiral minaret of Babylon (located in modern day Samarra, Iraq). It is a symbol of place where rituals between life and death are enacted.

Projected on the tower is an image of a Nautilus Shell.

As rituals mark time, and time spirals forward in overlapping cycles, we pay homage to the Golden Spiral as it manifests in Nature here in the form of a Nautilus shell, and also to the ancient spiral temple form.

Nature grows in spiral form. And, as Michael Schneider says in his book, A Beginner's Guide to Constructing the Universe, “Three principles of nature's spiral reveal to us its secrets of universal construction:

  1. Spirals grow by self-accumulation
  2. Every spiral has a calm eye
  3. Clashing opposites resolve into spiral balance”

Spirals are a representation of moving energy. The Golden Spiral contains the proportions of growth found in all biological life, as represented here by the nautilus shell. From the spiral galaxies, to the growth of a human embryo and other vertebrates, to whirlpools of water, to hurricanes, to the cross section of a bunch of celery, to the heart of a sunflower or daisy, to the spiral form of the human heart muscle. This proportion of growth is called phi, or the Golden Section.

Phi is a three-fold relationship that maintains the same proportion between the parts with each other and the whole. This proportional relationship between parts and the whole creates a geometric phenomenon known as self-similarity. The part reflects the whole at different scales. So that the same form is seen in a nautilus shell as you see in a spiral galaxy as you see in a whirlpool of water going down the drain, and as can be seen here in this diagram of a pentagram with the golden spiral coming out if it.

Laura DuBois created the projections and researched the sacred geometry of the golden spiral.
